Human Design Gates

Human Design Gates

There is a direct correlation to the codons of genetics and the hexagrams of the Chinese I Ching. It's a perfect match. Each Gate represents a Hexagram. The Hexagram structure is 6 Lines, either broken or unbroken lines that provides descriptive value to all life experiences.

Human Design places these Hexgram/Gates into nine separate Centers, which is the structure of the Bodygraph. Each Center has its own domain, for example the Splenic Center, and all its seven Gates, are framed within a larger understanding of it being an Awareness Center. Here spontaneous awareness, either intuition or instinct, can be found here, all all the Gates are designed to help us survive and be healthy in the moment.

There are 64 Gates, just as there are 64 Hexagrams and 64 Codons of Genetics. They are regarded as characteristics that help refine your uniqueness. For example, some Gates are naturally creative, some are logical and functional and some are full of experience.

The Gates are either coloured Black or Red. If Black, then we are aware of them in the way we identify with them as part of who we are. If they are in Red, then they are unconscious traits that we may not identify with at all. We just see their affect as they show themselves.

The 64 Gates

The short descriptions below are valid for those who have the Gate in a Defined Center and Black (Conscious).

Gate 1

The Gate of Self-Expression

You need to express yourself in your own way, without interference from others. Sometimes you won't even know why or how, but creativity and a unique sense of style just comes through you and you express yourself differently from everyone around you. You can sometimes be uncertain of your life's direction and yet in the moment, you can also express yourself at the perfect time to draw the attention of others.

However, at other times, people may think your eccentricity is just you being awkward, but you know differently. You know you are here to be different, especially when it comes to moving in your own direction in life.

Gate 2

The Gate of Higher Knowing

You have an inbuilt inner direction. Trust that direction. It will lead you towards beauty and harmony. Don't try to work it out. Don't try to control it according to your mind. Simply be open to your own natural tendency to follow a path that can lead you towards beauty and harmony and away from dissonance and atrophy.

You may well try many different directions in your life, depending on the backing you have to follow any particular path.

Gate 3

The Gate of Ordering

You have the quality of being someone who is really different. You are unique, but your uniqueness shows itself more prominently than many others. Some part of you will never fit into the 'world view' of how it is and how it should be.

You can be energetically confused in not knowing what you want to do, until you do know. It is helpful for you to understand that in order for you to really be happy, you will need to respond to bringing something new into the world. This response can be felt when your energy rises up to the challenge of making something that already exists different in some way, using your energy to make something happen that has never happened before.

Gate 4

The Gate of Formulization

You have a wonderful analytical side to your mind which understands things by projecting them forward in time according to certain logical principles. It can be great at providing answers to people's doubts about the future.

However, don't believe that any of your answers are solutions for you. They are not. They may be very clever formulas for 'success'. They may even be smart riddles that make others smile, but still they are not necessarily something that remains true in the 'real' world.

Untested theories don't become facts no matter how fervently you profess them. It is important to understand that the right answer at the wrong time is the wrong answer. Sometimes it is not answers others need, but simply someone to listen to their dilemmas, even if you think their focus in unreasonable.

Gate 5

The Gate of Fixed Rhythms

Notice how you consistently bring people into your established patterns of doing things. Pay attention to your natural rhythm and fix it in your life.

You are designed to avoid people and situations that may conflict with your own natural tempo. You have your own timing, your own natural habits that should not be interfered with. Those who try to 'change' you and try to get you to fit in with their timing, will meet a great deal of resistance from you.

Don't deviate from your natural rhythm. Your energy demands you live in your own flow.

Gate 6

The Gate of Friction

You have a complex emotional energy that can generate powerful emotional feelings. Some people you will resonate strongly with, and others you may feel are against you. You do not fear or avoid emotional conflict since sometimes it's your way of communicating how much you love someone by releasing your feelings in a confrontational way. Love can be a complicated business for you.

Understand that you will feel different things about something or someone over time. Do not judge it. This is not a matter of reason it is about the power of your emotional energy. You have a certain amount of control as to whether you allow someone in or not but can misjudge it if you act too quickly.

The awareness behind this emotional aspect in you reaches out to connect to a meaningful intimacy with others. Your ability to emotionally connect to others is not something everyone has the capacity to relate to.

Gate 7

The Gate of the Role of the Self

You are here to demonstrate a prescribed path in the way we march into the future. This includes an awareness of the different levels and hierarchies that exists on the way to a better future.

This logical aspect in your chart contains an awareness of procedures, sequences and what the correct order is in order to move yourself to the favored future. You may have thoughts along the following lines: Who goes first? What is the next logical step? If we do this then we need to do that in order to get there. What goes up must come down. What needs to come down in order for us to rise up to the next level? And so on.

You identify with being one of those people who may consciously lead others in the best way you know to live, if you were in their situation.

Gate 8

The Gate of Contribution

You have a natural urge to contribute to others. Whether this is helping another person or helping a group of people, you can bring a new element to the mix and give it selflessly. It is this aspect of you that says: "I can" help you, "I can" do it, "I can" find a person who will be the missing key – whatever it may be.

Now whether you can or not make a unique contribution to others often depends upon the timing. Just because you want to make a contribution and can say "I can" doesn't mean you actually can. And if you 'can't' then you're in trouble. So realize that when you say you can do something, others will probably ask you to prove that you can.

Gate 9

The Gate of Focus

You have within you the ability to focus your attention and the energy to focus on the small details. But what you focus on and how and when, are the questions that can impede you.

You may have a natural response to focus on details, but the question is 'For how long?' Will your attention waver over time? Will you become distracted? It all depends on your ability to discern a pattern in whatever you focus on. By discerning the pattern, no matter how detailed, you can bring all of your attention to bear upon it through a natural inherent response.

Gate 10

The Gate of Behavior of the Self

There is a built-in necessity to love yourself enough to behave according to your inherent nature. You are here to have your behavior reflect who and where you are. To be able to be oneself with contentment and yet to know how the social games are played, is a definite advantage to enjoying your life. There is no end to hierarchies and everyone has their place. You know how to behave. It may annoy you when others do not.

On the other hand, in loving yourself through behaving individualistically, you will not tolerate others trying to influence your behavior away from your inherent knowing of who you are. Allow yourself to behave appropriately as the circumstances change and acknowledge how so doing protects you. At the same time, you are here to remain centered in your own integrity even if that means being defiant to the social norms when the occasion demands it.

Gate 11

The Gate of Ideas

You can be deeply appreciated as a teacher who makes boring subjects interesting. You have endless ideas. All of them seeking expression; All of them wanting to be shared with others. So many ideas with such a diversity of possible expressions; Like a stream of abstract visuals that change so quickly, sometimes it can be difficult to get the words out fast enough.

Remember that your ideas are just ideas, they are not necessarily based in facts and therefore may not lead to action in reality, no matter how compelling. Don't allow your mind to take you into trying to live a fantasy. However, as a source of reflection, they can be invaluable and birth all kinds of philosophies and dramatic works.

Gate 12

The Gate of Caution

This characteristic in your Design is potentially highly mutative. You have the ability to articulate something in a totally unique and catalytic way. Through this 'voice' can come incredible music and poetry, it can express a new way of connecting with others at a deep and meaningful level. When connected to Gate 22 in the Emotional Centre this aspect in you can bring both passion and melodrama to the attention of others. It can be the outlet for the most sublime grace or the most outrageous disgrace in words or action.

It can also not speak or do anything. It carries a social cautiousness and is inherently moody. Its voice is "I'll Try" or not, depending upon whether the spirit is appropriate in the moment. Social interaction is always a risk whereas aloneness can often be a relief and allows for inwardly creative knowing to blossom.

Gate 13

The Gate of Listener

You have a natural empathy that attracts people who want to share with you their experiences. You will hear many secrets from people. They come up and they tell you their stories and they often tell you their negative experiences, the things that have happened to them in their life that have been damaging in some way.

Others see you as someone who will listen to them, there is nothing you can do about it. From their side they may say "I don't know why I'm telling you this, I don't normally share this with anyone".

You gradually attain a valuable perspective by reflecting upon your memories of what you have heard and become extremely valuable in providing others with a direction on how best to proceed their life.

Gate 14

The Gate of Power Skills

With this powerful aspect in your Design you have a tendency to really want to use your energy in service to what is truly original. You love to empower people and give energy to new projects, creative endeavors and original visions.

You especially enjoy encouraging people to go their own way. You know yourself how an encouraging 'pep' talk, at the right time can make all the difference when you don't know which direction to go in and don't know whether you can bring your unique magic out into the world.

However you can also become deeply frustrated when you try to push towards where your mind (rather than your Sacral response) wants you to go. Over time you come to the awareness that throwing money or energy at something that is not taking off is never a good thing.

Gate 15

The Gate of Extremes

You will likely be living out extreme aspects to your character, which you insist on upholding. For example, you may work flat out for 3 days and then do nothing for 4 days. You can be very disturbed by those who would have you be any other way and will resist being tied to anyone else's timing.

With this aspect you can have an extreme aspect to your character, which you insist on upholding. You can be very disturbed by those who would have you be any other way. You are attracted to those who also behave in an equally extreme and forthright way.

This can lead to a natural love of many of the world's cultures where what may be deemed extreme in one country, is considered to be quite normal in another.

Gate 16

The Gate of Skills

This is the Gate that expresses its enthusiasm to experiment. Without the 48th Gate it does not have the consistent depth awareness necessary to do whatever it would like to do, but it does contain the skills, discernment and critical ability to be able to use the information, techniques and modalities from those with the depth logical solutions.

It is also a Gate of identification, your identifying with something you love will bring the right people to you. You can hear the quality of enthusiasm in your voice for something when you speak. You have the ability to follow this enthusiasm up with identifying with whatever it is you want to master and thereby enter into practicing repeatedly in order to reach a high level of performance.
